This represents the capacity of every individual to act against cancer. It is an amazing influencing theme which is valid for another 3 years.

What is world cancer day?

World cancer day is organized by UICC (Union for International Cancer Control) to raise awareness against cancer. It is celebrated on February 4th of every year. This is the 20th anniversary of world cancer day which was first celebrated on this day in the year 2000. A Charter of Paris against Cancer was formed on World Cancer Day. This charter was signed between UNESCO and then French President Jacques Chirac.

Importance of world cancer day?

After the world cancer summit in Paris in 2000, the charter of Paris against cancer was signed to prevent, promote research and improve patient service. Organizers believe that this day is extremely important since every sixth death in the world is due to cancer, making it the second leading cause of death. On the 4 February, Cities and landmarks across the world will light up in orange and blue to commemorate world cancer day.

What has world cancer day achieved so far?

Since the creation of World Cancer Day, UICC has witnessed incredible progress in many areas, from increased political will, technological advancements, research breakthroughs, and greater public understanding of the disease.

However, in 2019 the World Health Organization included Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs), including cancer, as one of the top ten threats to public health. There is still much more to be done.

What you should do on this world cancer day?

9.6 million People die each year from cancer every year and experts project the death to rise to 13 million by 2030. As we all know that there is no designated method to treat cancer but it can be prevented. Prevention and creating awareness is the most probable way of beating the cancer epidemic i.e.more than one-third of cancer cases can be prevented. Another third can be cured if detected early and treated properly. By implementing resource-appropriate strategies on prevention, early detection and treatment, we can save up to 3.7 million lives every year.
