The new strain of coronavirus is called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus causes coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19). It is one of the viruses from the coronavirus family that ranges from the normal common cold to MERS (Middle East Corona Virus) and SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). It was in Wuhan, China that the first transmission took place. These droplets can enter the mouth or nose of someone without the virus, causing an infection to occur.<\/li>\n<li>The most common way that this illness spreads is through close contact with someone who has the infection. Close contact is within around\u00a06 feet.<\/li>\n<li>The disease is most contagious when a person\u2019s symptoms are at their peak. However, it is possible for someone without symptoms to spread the virus. The positive accolades are mainly because of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>South Korea\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/03\/12\/815097813\/experts-credit-south-koreas-extensive-testing-for-curbing-coronavirus-spread\">enormous virus testing programme<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Apart from this, the country\u2019s heavy use of surveillance technology, notably CCTV<\/li>\n<li>the tracking of bank card and mobile phone usage, to identify who to test in the first place is also commendable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What has been monumental in containing the outbreak is that The country\u00a0 learnt from the 2015\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/explainer-what-is-the-mers-outbreak-in-south-korea-43344\">outbreak of MERS<\/a>\u00a0and reorganised its disease control system.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Post this it built a good, large-capacity healthcare system<\/li>\n<li>And a sophisticated biotech industry that can produce test kits quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Owing to these factors the country was able to carry out\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/mar\/18\/covid-19-south-koreans-keep-calm-and-carry-on-testing\">15,000 tests per day<\/a>. COVID-19 is a mild disease for most people, only a small fraction of patients contacts the health authorities for testing and that too based on their symptoms or the likelihood of known contact with infected people. This is where the problem arises as many patients with mild symptoms, especially younger ones, don\u2019t realise they are ill and infecting others.<\/p>\n<p>If these patients aren\u2019t found, testing capacity doesn\u2019t mean much. This is where smart city infrastructure comes in. The aim is to work out where known patients have been and test anyone who might have come into contact with them. There are three main ways people are tracked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First<\/strong>, credit and debit cards. South Korea has the highest proportion of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nippon.com\/en\/japan-data\/h00417\/japan-remains-reliant-on-ready-money.html\">cashless\u00a0<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1962 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/vmedo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/south-korea-2.jpg\" alt=\"Credit card\" width=\"177\" height=\"95\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nippon.com\/en\/japan-data\/h00417\/japan-remains-reliant-on-ready-money.html\">transactions\u00a0<\/a>in the world. By tracking transactions, it\u2019s possible to draw a card user\u2019s movements on the map.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second,<\/strong> mobile phones can be used for the same purpose.
